These two teams will battle it out in the East Region with their game taking place at the HP Pavilion in San Jose, California. The Lobos are the No. 3 seed and the Huskies are the No. 11 seed.
Oddsmakers from online sports book SPORTSBETTING.com have made Washington 1.5-point favorites over New Mexico on Saturday night. The over/under has been set at 151. The Huskies are surprisingly the favorites despite being the worse seed.
New Mexico has not made it past the second round of the NCAA Tournament since 1975. The Lobos reached todayβs game by defeating No. 14 Montana 62-57 on Thursday. There wasnβt much to the win as the Lobos were evenly matched with the Grizzles, they simply converted on six more free throws, which was the difference. Still, New Mexico shot just 13-for-23 from the free throw line. Roman Martinez had 19 points, six rebounds, and four assists for the Lobos while Dairese Gary had 15 points and Darington Hobson added 11 points, 11 rebounds, and six assists.
The Huskies have appeared in four Sweet Sixteens in school history. Washington defeated No. 6 Marquette on Thursday, 80-78. The game was a shootout, as both teams shot over 50 percent from the field. The Huskies themselves shot 54.5 percent from the floor and were 9-of-14 from 3-point land. Isaiah Thomas had 19 points and eight assists in the win while Quincy Poindexter had 18 points and 11 rebounds. Elston Turner added 14 points and Matthew Bryan-Amaning had 11 points.
Washington shot the lights out on Thursday, and it canβt be expected for that to happen again. New Mexico will make it harder for the Huskies to score and Washington will open the door for some easy points for the Lobos. Oddsmakers may feel they know something with this unique spread, but we suggest taking the Lobos and the points with the under in this game.
