DETROIT (AP) -Justin Morneau will miss the All-Star game because of a concussion.
The Twins’ slugging first baseman withdrew from the midsummer classic on Saturday, following a doctor’s advice, and will return to Minnesota to rest during the break.
Morneau didn’t play Saturday, missing his third straight game with a concussion, and won’t be in the lineup for the series finale against the Detroit Tigers on Sunday.
Morneau was evaluated Saturday by Dr. Kenneth Podell, a concussions specialist who consults with pro teams in Detroit.
With Morneau out for the AL on Tuesday night in Anaheim, Calif., Detroit’s Miguel Cabrera likely will take his starting spot at first base. Another player – possibly Boston first baseman Kevin Youkilis or Paul Konerko of the Chicago White Sox – will be added to the roster.
