KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) -Red Sox first baseman Kevin Youkilis was hit in the wrist by a pitch in the first inning against Kansas City on Wednesday night and left the game after getting doubled off first base.
The Red Sox said Youkilis had a contusion on the right hand and X-rays were negative.
He was replaced in the bottom of the first by Sean Casey.
The pitch by Luke Hochevar appeared to hit Youkilis in the right wrist and possibly bounce into his chest or shoulder. He stood around a few minutes in discomfort but went to first base to run. The next batter, Mike Lowell, hit a liner back to Hochevar and Youkilis was doubled off.
The Red Sox started the night three games behind Tampa Bay in the AL East.
