CHICAGO (AP) -Florida Marlins right-hander Anibal Sanchez, who pitched a no-hitter against the Diamondbacks last September, will undergo exploratory arthroscopic shoulder surgery Thursday.
“They’re going to take a look in there with a scope,” general manager Larry Beinfest said Wednesday. “I don’t think they know exactly what it is, but they’re going to need to take a look.”
It’s not clear how long Sanchez will be sidelined, but he could be lost for the season.
“Obviously he’s going to have surgery, so it’s going to be a while,” Beinfest said. “We’ll know more tomorrow after he has it done.”
Sanchez was 10-3 with a 2.83 ERA in 2006 but made only six starts this year, going 2-1 with a 4.80 ERA, before he was optioned to Triple-A Albuquerque on May 4. He then went on the minor league DL a few days later. He hasn’t pitched with the Marlins since May 2, when he went 3 1-3 innings against the Mets.
Sanchez had been scheduled to be examined Wednesday by noted orthopedic surgeon Dr. James Andrews of Birmingham, Ala.
