The pitching matchup for this game has Jhoulys Chacin (2-3, 5.90 ERA) taking the mound for the Padres to face Matt Cain (2-0, 2.42) of the Giants. Cain has strung together three straight solid starts, allowing just two earned runs over his last 18 innings. Cain went six scoreless in a 2-1 win over the Dodgers in his last start. Chacin is coming off a 7-run, 6-inning outing against the Diamondbacks in his last start. He has alternated a poor start with a scoreless effort in his next outing.
The Giants won the series opener on Friday, 4-3. These two have split their four meetings this season now, with the home team winning three of them. San Francisco is 9-15 on the season and 6-6 at home. San Diego is now 9-16 overall and 4-12 on the road.
The Giants jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning of Friday’s game. The Padres would battle back to make it 3-2 before the Giants tied the game in the fifth and Christian Arroyo hit a solo home run in the eighth to lift San Fran to the win. Joe Panik and Brandon Belt combined for five hits while the Padres’ lone multi-hit player on Friday was Cory Spangenberg.
Matt Cain has been a great, surprising arm early for the Giants. They could use him now more than ever due to the injury to Madison Bumgarner. While Chacin has been good at bouncing back, I don’t think it will happen today. I can’t trust a guy that has multiple outings where he has allowed 7 or more runs.
