Padres Season Odds
The San Diego Padres aren’t expected to make much noise in the National League this season, but don’t they do have scattered talent. Let’s take a look at their odds.
The Padres made a couple of moves this offseason, including inking Jon Garland, Jerry Hairston Jr. and Yorvit Torrealba to contracts. The club also signed Matt Stairs and Chris Denorfia to minor league deals.
The Padres parted ways with Kevin Kouzmanoff, Eric Sogard, Brian Giles, Henry Blanco, Edgar Gonzalez, Eliezer Alfonzo and Shawn Hill over the offseason.
Oddsmakers from online sports book Sports Interaction have made the Padres 100/1 long shots to win the 2010 World Series and 45/1 to win the National League Pennant. They’re also 18/1 to win the NL West and have an over/under of 71.5 for number of wins in 2010.
The Padres don’t have enough overall talent to edge out the Rockies and Dodgers in the NL West, although with Adrian Gonzalez batting in the middle of their lineup, they’ll be in most games. They also have a couple of young, intriguing hitters in Tony Gwynn Jr., Kyle Blanks and Chase Headley that will keep San Diego competitive as well.
The problem is that the club doesn’t have an ace after trading Jake Peavy to the White Sox last year. Garland, Chris Young, Kevin Correia and Clayton Richard are innings-eaters, but none of the four are No. 1 pitchers. The Padres hope that Mat Latos can be their ace of the future, but he’ll need time to develop. Until he does, the Padres will likely struggle to keep pace in the NL West.
