FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (AP) – Backup quarterback AJ Derby settled down in the second half to lead Arkansas to a 24-3 win over Southern Mississippi on Saturday.
The question is will Derby be in control of the offense when the undefeated Razorbacks travel to Rutgers next week?
Derby, who spent last season in junior college after transferring from Iowa, played in place of injured starter Brandon Allen.
Allen bruised his right shoulder on a first-quarter touchdown run and spent the second half with his arm in a sling on the sideline, but Arkansas coach Bret Bielema said Allen was “pretty convinced” he’ll be able to play this week at Rutgers.
The Razorbacks (3-0) will need him as they prepare to open Southeastern Conference play against four straight ranked opponents following their game against the Scarlet Knights.
