DALLAS (AP) -The Dallas Stars are moving forward without franchise icon Mike Modano.
Stars general manager Joe Nieuwendyk said Tuesday the team has decided not to offer Modano a contract. The highest-scoring American-born player in NHL history becomes a free agent Thursday.
The team scheduled a news conference later Tuesday to discuss the decision.
The 40-year-old Modano said last week he wasn’t sure if would play for another team or retire if the Stars opted not to re-sign him. Nieuwendyk, on the team’s website, said it was a difficult decision after weeks of discussions with management and his former teammate.
