The person spoke on condition of anonymity to The Associated Press because the deal will not be announced until Thursday afternoon. Thomas is to appear at a news conference at the Dolphins’ training facility with other team officials.
Thomas spent 12 seasons with the Dolphins, then played for Dallas in 2008. The seven-time Pro Bowl player was in camp with Kansas City last year. He was released before the season because of undisclosed injury issues.
Oddsmakers from online sports book Sports Interaction have made the Dolphins 30/1 long shots to win the 2011 Super Bowl.
