After nearing making the Super Bowl in 2009, the New York Jets have high expectations for the 2010 season? But will a holdout derail their plans?

The Jets have had a busy offseason. They traded for veteran players Santonio Holmes (Steelers) and Antonio Cromartie (Chargers), and also added long-time NFL veterans LaDainian Tomlinson (Chargers) and Jason Taylor (Dolphins) via free agency.

But the biggest offseason hurdle that the Jets have had remains ongoing. As of this writing, the team has yet to sign Darrelle Revis to a contract extension and the cornerback has decided not to report to training camp. His absence could have a major affect on the Jets’ season, considering that he’s the team’s best and most important defender.

Oddsmakers from online sports book Sportsbook.com currently list the Jets at 10/1 to win the 2011 Super Bowl and 6/1 to win the AFC. They’re also +130 on the money line to win the AFC East Division and have an over/ under season win total of 9.5 games.

While losing Revis would be considered a major blow to their Super Bowl chances, the Jets did draft Boise State cornerback Kyle Wilson in the first round of April’s draft. Along with Cromartie, Wilson gives the Jets some depth at the defensive back position.

That said, Revis makes Rex Ryan’s defense go. Usually teams will have their best corner play on their opponents’ No. 2 receiver and double-team their top wideout. But thanks to his outstanding cover skills, the Jets are able to line Revis up man-to-man with the opponents’ best receiver, which obviously gives them a huge advantage.

Another concern for the Jets is the health status of second-year quarterback Mark Sanchez, who had knee surgery this offseason. And even if he is healthy, he’ll have to avoid the dreaded sophomore slump that most players endure in their second seasons.

But even with those concerns, the Jets are primed to make another postseason run. Revis should be back at some point before the start of the season and when that happens, the Jets will once again have one of the best defenses in the league. The team also did well to add Holmes and bring back Braylon Edwards so that Sanchez has more weapons to throw to this season in the passing game. (The running game should also be solid with the emergence of second-year running back Shonn Greene.)

Given their coaching and talent, it’s no wonder why some are picking the J.E.T.S. to get to Dallas this season.
