Bills Season Odds

The Buffalo Bills appear to be headed for another long year, at least according to oddsmakers.

Unless several players overachieve this season, it appears that the Bills are headed for another lackluster year. They signed defensive tackle Dwan Edwards from the Ravens and offensive tackle Cornell Green from the Raiders, but outside of that they didn’t make much noise in free agency. They also re-signed cornerback Ashton Youboty and tight end Derek Schouman.

But while the Bills were quiet in free agency, they were active on draft day. They selected Clemson running back C.J. Spiller with the ninth overall pick in the first round, then took back-to-back defensive linemen in the second (Central Florida DT Torell Troup) and third (Arkansas State DE Alex Carrington).

Oddsmakers from online sports book Sportsbook.com currently list the Bills as 100/1 long shots to win the 2011 Super Bowl. They’re also 50/1 long shots to win the AFC, are +2000 on the moneyline to win the AFC East Division and have an over/under win total of just 5.5 this season.

The Bills hired Chan Gailey this offseason to be their next head coach, but even though he has had success at both the college and pro level, it’s going to be awhile before Buffalo is competitive. Quarterback Trent Edwards lost his job to Ryan Fitzpatrick last year and seemed gun shy after an inexperienced offensive line failed him on many occasions. While the O-line is another year older, they’re still likely to struggle and that doesn’t bode well for Edwards or any other quarterback that lines up under center this year.

Spiller will add some excitment and playmaking ability to the offense, but unless Edwards and the offensive line steps up, then we wouldn’t expect the Bills to be competitive in 2010. There are just too many holes on this team and that’s even with everyone healthy.
