Penn St. Season Odds

Penn
State
has been on the cusp of playing for a national title for many years but never broken through. Can the Nittany Lions finally reach the final game in 2010?

Joe Paterno is in his 45th year as head coach of

Penn
State
and he is riding back-to-back 11-win seasons. Last year
Penn
State suffered losses to
Iowa and

Ohio
State
or else it would have found itself playing for the national title.

This season,

Penn
State
brings back 13 starters, five of which come on offense. Evan Royster returns at running back after rushing for 1,169 yards and six touchdowns last season while receivers Derek Moye and Graham Zug are also back after combing for 13 scores.

What is new is quarterback Kevin Newsome, who replaces Daryll Clark.
Clark threw for over 3,000 yards last year but Newsome did see limited snaps as a freshman.

Newsome returns four starters on the offensive line including an All-Big Ten guard.

On defense, the Nittany Lions have just five starters back from a solid group that allowed just 12.2 points per-game.

The Nittany Lions return two from the defensive line and three from the secondary, but don’t return a single linebacker and lose four of their top five tacklers from 2009.

Leading the team will be defensive back Nick Sukay, who had 11 pass deflections and 41 tackles last year.

Oddsmakers from online sports book SPORTSBETTING.com currently list

Penn
State
at 20/1 to win the 2011 BCS National Championship. The Nittany Lions are also listed at 6/1 to win the Big Ten Conference.

Penn
State has a tough schedule in that it has to win at
Alabama,
Ohio
State
, and

Iowa
. Aside from that, the Nittany Lions should be able to win the rest of their games. With a young quarterback, it is tough to see

Penn
State
getting past these tough defenses and an inexperienced defense will lead to some big plays against it. We don’t look for

Penn
State
to contend for the BCS title this year as it should suffer at least two defeats.

2010 Over/Under Win Total: 8.5

2011 BCS Championship Odds:

Penn

Nittany Lions 20/1

2010 Big Ten Conference Championship Odds:
