The second week of the 2009 NCAA Football Season had a few surprises and a few betting upsets.

Trojans top Buckeyes, OSU covers

Ohio
State was a 7-point underdog at home against USC on Saturday according to online sports book SPORTSBETTING.com. While the Buckeyes lost 18-15 to the Trojans, they did cover the spread by four points. The public overwhelmingly went with USC, with 73 percent taking the Trojans -7, but

Ohio
State put together a solid defensive performance to keep USC’s offense in check. Aside from a late fourth-quarter scoring drive, the Buckeyes led for most of the game.

Wolverines upset the Irish

Michigan was a 3.5-point underdog against Notre Dame on Saturday in

Ann Arbor, and in a back-and-forth contest, the Wolverines won the game outright, 38-34. A touchdown pass by Tate Forcier to Greg Mathews in the final seconds pushed the Wolverines past the Irish. The public was solidly behind Notre Dame, with 68 percent taking the Irish with the 3.5 pints.

Longhorns cruise, but don’t cover

Betters had to be a little more than upset when
Texas could only manage to defeat

San Jose
State by a final score of 41-10. The Longhorns came into the game favored by 31.5 points, and came up half-a-point shy of the mark. The Longhorns started slow, leading just 13-10 at halftime, but rallied for 28 unanswered in the second half. 84 percent of the public bets were for the Longhorns with the spread.

Northwestern comes up flat in victory

In a less notable game, Northwestern defeated
Eastern Michigan 27-24 at home. The Wildcats were a 21-point favorite to beat the Eagles and 82 percent of public bets went with Northwester to cover the spread. Northwestern led by as much as 14 points in the game, but the Wildcats allowed the Eagles to make a late run, tying the game at 24-24 in the fourth quarter before Northwestern kicked a 49-yard field goal for the win.
