WASHINGTON (AP) -Connecticut coach Jim Calhoun missed an entire game for the first time in nearly five years Saturday, sitting out the Huskies’ 72-69 loss to No. 7 Georgetown because of flulike symptoms.
Calhoun, who was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Hall of Fame in 2005, left the sideline in the second half of Connecticut’s victory over St. John’s on Tuesday night, but he was expected to coach Saturday.
“He was a little dehydrated. He really just was pretty sick last night and it carried over today,” said associate head coach George Blaney, who led Connecticut in Calhoun’s place.
Calhoun was at the arena but stayed in the coaches’ locker room at tipoff after being told by the team doctor he shouldn’t head out to courtside.
“He did talk to the team before we went out on the floor,” Blaney said. “He did talk to the team after the game. Hopefully he’s going to be fine.”
Calhoun has missed a part or all of 19 games since 1990, UConn assistant athletic director Kyle Muncy said. The last time UConn played a game and Calhoun didn’t coach any of it was in February 2003, when he was recovering from prostate cancer surgery.
