Miami Florida is 1-0 and ranked seventh in this week’s AP Top 25. The opener could hardly have gone better. Duke transfer quarterback Darian Mensah completed 27 of 30 passes for 401 yards and five touchdowns in his debut, and receiver Malachi Toney went for a school-record 234 yards. The Hurricanes scored touchdowns on six of their first seven possessions against Stanford. Stanford never reached the end zone.
Florida A&M arrives at 1-1 and in trouble at the game’s most important position. The Rattlers beat Albany State 20-7, then lost 31-13 to South Carolina State in the Orange Blossom Classic at this same stadium. FAMU managed 161 total yards and minus-1 rushing yards with only 10 first downs.
Worse, starting quarterback Isaiah Knowles broke his thumb in that loss. FAMU confirmed on Wednesday that Knowles is out for the season. Citadel graduate transfer Dustin Fletcher takes over. Fletcher was efficient in relief, going 6 of 8 for 68 yards, but he now makes his first start on the road against a top-10 defense. First-year head coach Quinn Gray has very little margin to work with.
There is one bright spot. FAMU’s defense is the better unit. Safety Justin Bostic picked off two passes against South Carolina State and returned one 80 yards for a score.

The counterargument is arithmetic and roster management. To cover 56.5, Miami essentially needs to win 60-3. That requires starters playing deep into the second half, and there is no reason for Mensah to be out there in the fourth quarter of a 40-point game. College football’s running clock rules shorten these blowouts too. One garbage-time touchdown flips this cover.
