Mets Season Odds
The New York Mets have scattered talent, but can they finally put it all together in order to make a postseason run? Let’s take a look at their odds.
As usual, the Mets made another huge splash in free agency, inking left fielder Jason Bay to a four-year, $66 million deal in the offseason. The club also signed reliever Kelvim Escobar, infielders Alex Cora, Fernando Tatis and catchers Henry Blanco, Chris Coste and Rod Barajas. New York also acquired Gary Matthews Jr. from the Angels in exchange for reliever Brian Stokes and claimed Jason Pridie off waivers from the Twins.
The Mets’ notable offseason losses were Kiko Calero, Hisanori Takahashi, Josh Fogg, Mike Jacobs, Frank Catalanotto and Elmer Dessens.
When everyone’s healthy, the Mets have a solid top of the lineup. But Jose Reyes will start the season on the DL and there’s no clear timetable for his return. When he does return, Reyes fits nicely with Carlos Beltran, David Wright, Bay and Daniel Murphy in the Mets’ lineup.
The problem (besides the fact that the club might be cursed), is that the Mets completely ignored their biggest need this offseason: Starting Pitching. Outside of Johan Santana (who is dealing with injuries as well), the rest of the Mets’ rotation is brutal. If John Maine, Oliver Perez, Mike Pelfrey and Jon Niese don’t post ERA’s south of 4.50, then the Mets are in trouble.
Oddsmakers from online sports book SPORTSBETTING.com have made the Mets 35/1 long shots to win the 2010 World Series and 18/1 to win the National League Pennant. They’re 8/1 to win the NL East and have an over/under total of 81 for number of wins.
