2011 boxing pick miguel cotto antonio margarito

NEW YORK (TheSpread) – The rematch between Miguel Cotto and Antonio Margarito takes place Saturday night and here is our pick for who will win this bout.

According to oddsmakers, Cotto is the slight favorite to retain his WBA Super World Light Middleweight Championship on Saturday night with a money line of -250 while Margarito has odds of +190. These two will square off from Madison Square Garden in New York and the event will air live on HBO PPV on Saturday at 9PM ET. Here is a look at both fighters and our pick for the bout.

Miguel Cotto (36-2-0, 29 KO’s)

Strengths: Cotto is the younger fighter at 31 years of age and he is riding a two-fight win streak, both by KO. His lone losses come at the hands of Manny Pacquiao and Margarito, who was found to be cheating in his next bout, which leaves that loss in question. Cotto packs a punch as he has has finished four of his last five opponents in victory. Cotto also likes a fast start, as he got out early on Margarito before fading late.

Weaknesses: Conditioning could be an issue for Cotto. In both losses, he was stopped late, losing to Margarito in the 11th round and Pacquiao in the 12th. While Cotto has motivation to get revenge on Margarito, he has more to lose in the fight as his title is one the line and two losses to Margarito could really hurt his career.

Antonio Margarito (38-7-0, 27 KO’s)

Strengths: Margarito is a fighter that has proven tough to put away. He went the distance with Pacquiao last year and slugged it out with Mosley before getting stopped in the ninth round. Margarito also has the motivation to defend his name as people are questioning whether he honestly won the first fight or if he was cheating with loaded hand wraps.

Weaknesses: Since being discovered with the loaded hand wraps, Margarito has went 1-2 and hasn’t finished an opponent. That would leave his power in doubt and has to make you wonder if he was cheating in the first fight with Cotto. If he was, would he have been able to finish Cotto off late and get the win? Also, at 33, Margarito looks a little worse for the wear and could struggle down the stretch as he prepares to enter into another physical fight.

Who to pick: In this rematch, I like Cotto. Margarito is just not the same fighter since the first fight and Cotto looks to have learned from the loss. I think Cotto will use the same strategy he did to take an early edge on Margarito, but have the skill to complete the fight. Look for him to come out with a decision win and avenge his previous loss. BOXING FREE PICK: Miguel Cotto -250
