Oddsmakers from online sports book Sportsbook.com have made Auburn a 7.5-point favorite over Georgia, but that number will certainly drop if it’s discovered that Newton won’t play. In fact, the number could drop as low as a field goal.
Two days after Auburn head coach Gene Chizik said that Newton wills tart against the Bulldogs, athletic director Jay Jacobs said that he wouldn’t comment on the Heisman candidate’s status for Saturday.
Newton and his family are being accused of soliciting money last year from Mississippi State in order to get the quarterback to play for them. Kenny Rogers, a former Mississippi state player who has worked for a Chicago-based agent, said that Newton’s father Cecil of asking for anywhere from $100,000 to $180,000 for his son to sign a scholarship with the Bulldogs. It’s also being reported that Newton was involved in three separate cases of academic cheating while he was enrolled at Florida.
That said, news reports state that Newton practiced with Auburn’s first team on Thursday night and should start. Chances are he will play seeing as how the NCAA would have likely made a statement by now if it were suspending Newton.
Either way, Georgia is looking like a strong bet given all the drama that is surrounding Auburn’s program. Should make for an interesting Saturday in Auburn.
