Sharks sign Pavelski to extension
SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) – The San Jose Sharks have signed center Joe Pavelski to a five-year, $30 million contract extension that will keep him off the free-agent market next summer.
The team announced the deal Tuesday to lock up one of the cornerstones of the franchise through the 2018-19 season.
This marks the second key player general manager Doug Wilson has signed to an extension this offseason before they could become free agents next summer. Center Logan Couture also signed a $30 million, five-year extension earlier this month.
The 29-year-old Pavelski was third in the team in points last season, when he had 16 goals and 15 assists in 48 games. He is a key part of both the power-play and penalty-kill units and has the versatility to play center or wing.
According to oddsmakers from online sports book Bovada.lv, the Sharks are 18/1 to win the 2014 Stanley Cup, while the Blackhawks remain favored at 6/1 to defend their title. The Penguins are also 13/2, while the Bruins are 10/1 and the Kings and Blues are both 12/1, respectively.
