CINCINNATI (AP) – The Bengals pulled off a rare move to pick a center who could start right away.
They traded up 12 spots to select Russell Bodine from North Carolina in the fourth round on Saturday. They don’t often move up in the draft. It had been 12 years since they did it.
Offensive line coach Paul Alexander says Bodine will compete for the starting job this season. The Bengals released veteran center Kyle Cook in March. Cook was the starter last season.
So far, the Bengals have chosen Michigan State cornerback Darqueze Dennard, LSU running back Jeremy Hill, West Virginia defensive end Will Clarke and Bodine. They gave up a sixth-round pick to Seattle to move up in the fourth round.
