Will Clowney win the DROY Award?
LAS VEGAS, NV (The Spread) – Will the first overall pick in the 2014 NFL Draft win the Defensive Rookie of the Year? Let’s check out the odds.
According to oddsmakers from online sports book Bovada.lv, the odds that Houston Texans first overall pick Jadeveon Clowney will win the 2014 Defensive Rookie of the Year award are 2/1. Meanwhile, the odds that Khalil Mack, who was the fifth overall selection in the 2014 NFL Draft to the Oakland Raiders, are 4/1.
The over/under for amount of sacks that Clowney will have in the 2014 NFL regular season have been set at 9 and at 8 for Mack. No rookie finished with 9 or more sacks last year in the NFL, although Lions’ first overall pick Ezekiel Ansah did finish with 8. Even though Clowney is an athletic freak that will play with both J.J. Watt and Brian Cushing in that Texans’ defense, it’s going to be hard for him to eclipse 9 sacks in his rookie campaign.
While we’re on the topic of rookie odds: Will Michael Sam be on the Rams’ 53 man roster for Week 1 of the 2014 regular season? The odds for him cracking the roster are 2/1, while the odds for him missing the roster are 1/3. That means if you place a $100.00 wager on him making the roster, you’ll win $200.00 (assuming he makes it), and if you wager $300.00 on him missing the roster, you’ll win $100.00.
Sam, of course, is the first openly gay player to be drafted into the NFL. He has a difficult challenge ahead of him to make the roster due to the fact that the Rams’ strength is along the defensive line. Robert Quinn, Chris Long and Aaron Donald are all first-round picks and thus mainstays on the roster, while Kendall Langford, William Hayes and Alex Carrington are quality backups/rotational pieces. Sam might be fighting with up to three other players for one final spot on the defensive line.
