According to oddsmakers from online sports book Sportsbook.com, the Packers are 1.5-point favorites in the first half against the Steelers in Super Bowl XLV, although you’ll have to lay –115 juice on Pittsburgh to get +1.5. The over/under total for the first half is 22.5, but you’re laying –115 juice on the over.
The Packers are 3-point favorites over the Steelers, so it’s not surprising that they’re odds in the first half are –1.5. The line appears to be staying steady at 3, but you never know which way the public or sharps will move the line in Vegas and how that will affect the online books.
For reference sake, the Colts were 4.5-point favorites over the Saints and took a 10-6 lead into halftime in the 2010 Super Bowl. In 2009, the Steelers were 6.5-point favorites and were ahead 17-7 at halftime thanks to James Harrison’s touchdown at the end of the second quarter.
In 2008, the Patriots were a whopping 12.5-point favorite over the Giants and were ahead 7-3 at halftime. In 2007, the Colts were 6.5-point favorites over the Bears, but led just 16-14 at the half.
So if there’s anything to be learned from the previous four Super Bowls it’s that the favorite has been ahead at halftime. That said, the Patriots were 6-point favorites in the first half against the Giants and failed to cover and the Colts were 3-point favorites against the Bears in the first half and failed to cover that number.
Still, if you want to base your first half bet on the most recent Super Bowls, the Packers at –1.5 with –105 juice isn’t a bad play. It’s rare when a team is ahead by only one or two points, so chances are Green Bay will be leading by at least a field goal if they are ahead heading into the locker room. If not, then they’re either tied or losing and you would lose the bet anyway.
Other spreads to note: the Packers are –0.5 favorites in the first quarter at +120 juice, while the Steelers are +0.5 with –140 juice for the first quarter. So clearly oddsmakers feel as though Pittsburgh will be ahead or tied after the first quarter of play.
