Super Bowl 52 Spread Holding Steady

It’s the morning of Super Bowl Sunday in the NFL and with that, here’s the latest on the spread and total for tonight’s Eagles and Patriots matchup.

According to oddsmakers from online sports book YouWager, the Patriots are currently 4.5-point favorites to knock off the Eagles at 6:30 p.m. ET tonight. New England opened as a 6-point favorite at many sportsbooks but the number was immediately bet down to 5.5…then 5…then 4.5…then 4 at some places before climbing back up to 4.5.

As for the total, the number hit the board at 47.5 but was bet up to 48. Now the over/under is sitting at 48.5 at most online and Vegas sportsbooks. It’s unlikely that this number will move much before kickoff, unless sharp bettors come in and start hitting the under.

As of Sunday morning, public bettors are still backing the Eagles. Just over 50% of betting tickets wagered at online sportsbooks are on Philadelphia to cover the spread, although 55% of the money wagered at those same books is on New England. As for the total, 57% of the betting tickets wagered at online sportsbooks are on the over but 54% of the betting tickets are on the under.

Underdogs have won six of the last 10 Super Bowls and have covered in nine of the last 10 games. Nine underdogs have already covered games this postseason, which is the most in a single postseason in the Super Bowl era. No matter which team covers the spread in Super Bowl 52, this will be the best ATS percentage by underdogs in a single NFL postseason in that span.
