Patriots coming off loss
The New England Patriots are coming off a surprising 31-20 loss at Jacksonville last week to drop to 1-1 on the season. They are 1-1 against the spread as well while going 1-1 with the over/under.
New England hasn’t looked good on defense through two games, giving up 25.5 points and 411.5 yards per game. They have managed to force four turnovers through two games. On offense, the Patriots are putting up 23.5 points and 357.5 yards per game. Tom Brady has thrown for 511 yards and five touchdowns with just one interceptions. Rob Gronkowski is the leading receiver with nine catches for 138 yards and a touchdown despite a quiet Week 2.
Lions off to poor start
A rough preseason has led to an 0-2 start for the Detroit Lions following a 30-27 loss at San Francisco last week. The Lions managed to cover as a road underdog last week to get to 1-1 against the spread and they have hit the over in their last five games, including preseason contests.
The Lions are giving up 39 points and 381.5 yards per game thus far on defense, including 180 rushing yards per game. They do have eight sacks as a unit, but giving up a lot of chunk plays. Offensively, Detroit is putting up 22 points and 392 yards per game. They once again have one of the worst rushing attacks in the NFL, averaging just 68.5 yards per game on the ground. Matthew Stafford has thrown for 633 yards and four touchdowns, but also has four interceptions and two lost fumbles. Kenny Golladay has 203 receiving yards on 13 catches and a touchdown.
NFL Betting Trends
New England
The Patriots have hit the under in four of their last five games in September and in five of their last seven games following a loss.
Detroit
The Lions have hit the over in eight of their last 10 home games and in five of their last six following a loss.
Prediction:
This game can go a number of ways, but ultimately I think it will be high scoring. Following a loss, I expect the Patriots to come out on fire offensively. They should be able to carve up this Detroit defense with some ease. Bill Belichick has a history of beating up on his former assistants and this should be no different. The Lions were blasted by the 1-2 Jets at home. When the game starts to get out of hand, that is when the Lions can start to score some points. They rallied late against San Fran for 14 points in the fourth when down 30-13. More of that can take place this Sunday to help the over hit.
NFL Prediction: Patriots/Lions Over 53.5
