2012 Super Bowl Odds: Redskins not expected to make much noise

Redskins 2011 Season Odds

(The Spread) – Confused by the way Mike Shanahan is running things up in D.C.? So are oddsmakers.

Oddsmakers currently list the Redskins as massive long shots to win the 2012 Super Bowl at 100/1, which gives them the same odds as the Cincinnati Bengals and similar odds to the lowly Panthers (125/1) and Bills (150/1).

The biggest issue with the Skins is that Shanahan hasn’t filled the roster with much talent since taking over in 2010. He butted heads with major free agent bust Albert Haynesworth (now with the Patriots), unexpectedly benched Donovan McNabb (now with the Vikings) last year in favor of Rex Grossman, and is apparently set to name John Beck his starting quarterback.

For those in need of a refresher, this is the same John Beck who was drafted in the second round of the 2007 draft but lasted just two years in Miami before joining the Ravens in 2009. He was traded to the Redskins for now-free agent cornerback Doug Dutch, which is quite a low price for a team to part with in order to get what they believe is a starting quarterback.

The Shanahans are excited about Beck’s potential but you’ll have to excuse oddsmakers and fans for having their doubts. Whether it’s Beck or Grossman that winds up starting, they’re going to struggle given the Redskins’ overall lack of talent. Santana Moss is a fine player and Jabar Gaffeny is a good vet, but there’s not a ton of explosion on that side of the ball. The defense isn’t as bad as the offense makes it out to be, but this is a unit that could find itself on the field a lot again in 2011.

The bottom line is that the Skins will struggle again this year, which is reflected in their odds. Aside from their long Super Bowl odds, they’re also 50/1 to win the NFC and +2000 to win a very tough NFC East. Don’t count on Shanahan’s squad to be much improved from a year ago.
