Defensive Rookie of the Year Odds
(The Spread) – The odds are out for the 2011 NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year, where Cardinals’ cornerback Patrick Peterson is favored to win.
Oddsmakers from online sports book Bodog have made Peterson a 6/1 favorite to win the 2011 NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year award. Lions’ defensive tackle Nick Fairley is 13/2 as is Broncos’ linebacker Von Miller, while Bills’ DT Marcell Dareus is 15/2.
Patrick Peterson was the fifth player selected in the 2011 NFL Draft. The 219-pound corner is a physical marvel in that he’s built like a safety, but can run like a corner. Some scouts initially thought he would have to play safety at the next level, but there’s no reason to believe that he can’t hang with NFL receivers at the corner position once he gets some experience.
Nick Fairley will have the advantage of lining up next to behemoth Ndamukong Suh, who won the AP Defensive Rookie of the Year in 2010. Fairley has been criticized for taking plays off and not being focused, but Suh proved last year that he’s one of the hardest working players in the game (even though he was a rookie). If Suh can help him stay motivated, Fairley could have a big year in Motown.
Von Miller was a bit of a surprise pick at No. 2 by the Broncos, but he could make an impact right away as a pass rusher. Most scouts saw him as a 3-4 outside linebacker, but Denver is switching to a 4-3 this season so it’ll be interesting to see how Miller fairs as a 4-3 OLB. If the Broncos can figure out a way to get him loose on the edge, he may be able to rack up the sacks.
It’s not surprising that Marcell Dareus is one of the mid-range favorites to win the DROY award this year. He has all of the talent to be a dominant interior defender and was a safe pick for the Bills at No. 3. But DTs usually don’t rack up big numbers (save for Suh last year) and Buffalo’s defense is void of talent as a whole.
Considering seven of the last eight Defensive Rookie of the Year awards went to linebackers, Bruce Carter is a decent buy at 14/1. That said, he’s coming off major surgery to his knee so he may not contribute for another year or two.
