CINCINNATI, OH (TheSpread) – The San Diego Chargers need to win out to have a chance at making the playoffs. They shouldn’t have much problem with a struggling Cincinnati Bengals team on Sunday. Continue reading for odds, picks and more on this Week 16 NFL matchup.
According to current NFL Week 16 odds and oddsmakers from online sports book SBGGLOBAL.com, the Chargers are 9-point favorites over the Bengals this Sunday. The over/under total for this game is 44.5 points.
The Chargers improved to 8-6 when they beat the 49ers last Thursday night and are now 8-6 against the spread. They’re 2-4 on the road this year, however, and have failed to cover in four of their six games away from home.
The Bengals beat the Browns last Sunday to run their record to 3-11 and also covered (although they’re still just 5-9 against the spread according to latest NFL trends). They’re 2-5 at home this season, which includes a 3-4 ATS record at Paul Brown Stadium.

We normally don’t advise laying this many points with a road team but we’re not going to overthink this one. The Chargers need this game badly, while the Bengals don’t. Cincinnati was happy enough to break its losing streak last week but a better San Diego team should pound the Bengals with its playoff hopes on the line. Cincy has a couple of great young corners in Leon Hall and Jonathan Joseph, but Philip Rivers is playing outstanding ball right now and he’s starting to get his rhythm back with Vincent Jackson. The Bengals could have a hard time moving the ball against San Diego’s stout defense, as well. The road team is 4-0 against the spread in the last four meetings between these two teams and the Chargers are 5-1 ATS in their last six games versus the AFC. Our pick is the Chargers –9.
