Florida 36-Point Favorites in opener

The Gators have won their last 20 season openers, with the last 12 victories coming by an average of 39 points per-game. The RedHawks have the edge in this series surprisingly, as Miami defeated Florida 16-7 in their only other meeting in the 1973 Tangerine Bowl.

Oddsmakers from online sports book Sportsbook.com currently list Florida as 36-point favorites against Miami. The over/under for the game has been set at 52.5.

The Gators and coach Urban Meyer turn control of the offense over to junior quarterback John Brantley. Brantley saw limited action in 2009, throwing for 410 yards and seven touchdowns without an interception. More of a pocket passer, Brantley should make Florida more of a pro-style offense this season. The Gators return four on the offensive line and four of the leading rushers from last season. The key will be getting production at wide receiver, where just one of the leading five receivers is back. On defense, Florida allowed just 12.4 points and 253 yards per-game last season, but the Gators have just five starters back on that side of the ball.

Miami struggled in 2009 under first-year coach Mike Haywood, going just 1-11, but the RedHawks return 20 starters, including 10 on offense. Quarterback Zac Dysert will lead the offense, which has to improve on a poor running game. The RedHawks only averaged 70 yards per-game on the ground. On defense, Miami gave up 34.2 points and 377 yards per-game last season, but Miami has 10 of its top 11 tacklers back this season.
