Utah started the season last Thursday, beating Michigan at home, 24-17, which spoiled the debut of Jim Harbaugh. The Utes covered a 5-point spread and went under the 45-point total. The two teams were pretty even in yards, as Utah had 337 to Michigan’s 355, but three turnovers from the Wolverines were the difference. The big play was a 55-yard INT for a touchdown in the fourth quarter by Justin Thomas. Quarterback Travis Wilson was 24 of 33 passing for 208 yards in the victory while Devontae Booker was held to just 69 rushing yards on 22 carries.
Utah State started the season with a 12-9 win over Southern Utah. The Aggies were a 31-point favorite despite the 3-point win. The two easily went under the 47-point total. Both teams struggled to move the ball as Utah State had only 250 yards of offense while Southern Utah had just 163 total yards. Chuckie Keeton had a lackluster return, going just 16 of 33 passing for 110 yards with an interception. LaJuan Hunt led the offense with 80 rushing yards, but it came on 23 carries. Utah State’s lone touchdown came on an 88-yard punt return from Andrew Rodriguez.
