ATLANTA, GA (TheSpread) – No. 2 Auburn has one final test to pass in order to play for a national championship as the Tigers take on No. 18 South Carolina in the SEC Championship.
Auburn is 12-0 on the season and 8-0 in the SEC while South Carolina is 9-3 on the year and 5-3 in conference play. Auburn already holds a 35-27 win at home over the Gamecocks this season. This game will be played from the Georgia Dome in Atlanta.
Trends show that Auburn has covered the spread in their last five conference games while South Carolina is 2-5 ATS in their last seven games following a win.
Oddsmakers from online sportsbook Sportsbook.com have made Auburn 5.5-point favorites against South Carolina on Saturday. The over/under total has been set at 61. (View Matchup)
Opening odds had Auburn favored by 5.5 points. The spread fell back to 4.5 points before climbing as high as 6 during the week. The spread ultimately settled in at 5.5 points. The over/under total hasn’t changed since opening at 61 points.
Auburn is unbeaten this season with six wins coming by single digits. The Tigers quarterback Cam Newton is the clear favorite to win the Heisman Trophy, as he has thrown for 2,254 yards and 24 touchdowns while rushing for 1,336 yards and 18 scores. Newton was quietly ruled ineligible for the game for a day before being reinstated by the NCAA as they ruled that Cam’s father, Cecil, knowingly shopped his son around to schools other than Auburn but Cam never was aware. The Auburn offense as a whole is averaging 491.3 yards per game, which ranks ninth nationally and their 41.6 points per game ranks seventh. On defense, Auburn is giving up 25.1 points and 354.9 yards per game, including just 99.7 rushing yards per contest, which ranks ninth in the nation for fewest allowed.
South Carolina has won three straight games heading into this championship game. The Gamecocks are playing for the title for the first time under coach Steve Spurrier. The South Carolina defense is one of the best in the SEC as it allowed just 91.6 rushing yards per game, the fourth fewest in the country. As a whole they allowed 20.2 points and 337.1 yards per game defensively while racking up 33.2 points and 398.8 yards per game on offense. Marcus Lattimore has rushed for 1,114 yards and 17 touchdowns on the season while Stephen Garcia has thrown for 2,646 yards and 18 touchdowns.
South Carolina quarterback Stephen Garcia is dealing with a shoulder Injury but is expected to play while Auburn has no new injuries to report for the game.
