Longhorns have big odds
No. 5 Texas opens the 2010 College Football season at Reliant Stadium in Houston when the Longhorns take on Rice at 3:30PM ET.
Texas has won its last 10 meetings with Rice and scored at least 50 points in the last four meetings. In 39 career games, Rice has only defeated Texas one time.
Oddsmakers from online sports book SBGGLOBAL currently list Texas as 30.5-point favorites against the Owls. The over/under has been set at 57.
Texas went 13-1 last season, winning the Big 12 Championship and coming up just shy of the national title in a loss to Alabama. This year, Texas has to replace some key parts from an offense that racked up 39.3 points and 421 yards per-game. Garrett Gilbert takes over at quarterback for Colt McCoy. Gilbert played most of the BCS title game for McCoy and showed some promise as he enters his sophomore year. Also gone is receiver and return man Jordan Shipley, who racked up nearly 1,500 receiving yards in 2009. On defense, Texas allowed just 16.7 points and 252 yards per-game and the unit has seven starters back, including three in the secondary.
Rice is coming off a dismal 2-10 season in 2009, but that was just a year after going 10-3 in 2008. The Owls have 19 starters back this season, including quarterback Nick Fanuzzi, who threw for 1,598 yards and 11 touchdowns in limited action last season. On defense, Rice struggled, allowing 43.1 points and 464 yards per-game, but the Owls bring back nine starters, including All-Conference USA linebacker Travis Bradshaw, who had 121 tackles.
