Starting for Pittsburgh will be Chad Kuhl (7-10, 4.32 ERA), while St. Louis counters with Carlos Martinez (11-10, 3.34). Kuhl carries a 1.44 WHIP with 125 strikeouts in 141 2/3 innings. He threw seven shutout innings in a 12-0 home win over the Cubs his last start, allowing four hits while striking out eight and walking two. He has a 4.24 ERA in 14 road starts. Martinez has a 1.19 WHIP with 192 strikeouts in 183 innings. He threw a complete-game shutout his last outing as he gave up three hits with 10 strikeouts and three walks in a 2-0 win at the Padres.
Pittsburgh comes in at 67-75 overall and 28-41 on the road, while St. Louis is 73-68 and 38-31 at home. The two teams have split the last 10 meetings 5-5 and the over-under is also 5-5.
Friday’s game saw the Cardinals cruise to a 4-1 victory. Luke Weaver continued his excellent pitching as he threw 5 2/3 shutout innings with seven strikeouts. Juan Nicasio earned his third save. Jose Martinez was 2-for-4 with two RBIs. Josh Bell went 3-for-4 to lead the Pirates, while Adam Frazier had an RBI pinch-hit single. Trevor Williams gave up four runs in 4 2/3 innings to take the loss.
Martinez was outstanding in his last start and so was Kuhl. While the Pirates hitters might be more used to what he has to offer due to seeing him more, it’s still going to be tough sledding against a pitcher so locked in. Kuhl is also riding high after his last start, plus the bullpens on both teams have the arms to get it down. Bet the under in this game.
