The start for Baltimore will go to Ubaldo Jimenez (5-9, 6.80 ERA), while the Blue Jays turn to Marco Estrada (7-8, 5.00). Jimenez comes in with a 1.60 WHIP with 121 strikeouts in 129 2/3 innings. His last appearance was out of the bullpen, scoreless innings versus the Yankees in a 7-6 home win on September 5. Jimenez’ last start came on August 30 as he allowed six earned runs on six hits with three strikeouts and a walk over 2 2/3 innings in an 8-7 home win versus the Mariners.
The Orioles are 71-72 and 27-42 on the road, while Toronto is 66-77 and 37-35 at home. Baltimore has won six of the last 10 meetings and the over-under is 2-7-1.
Over the weekend, the Orioles had their losing streak extended to four games as they were swept in a three-game series at red-hot Cleveland. Baltimore lost Sunday night’s game 3-2 to the Indians as Jeremy Hellickson allowed three earned runs over six innings to take the loss. Jonathan Schoop was 3-for-4 with an RBI to pace the offense. Manny Machado went 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI. The Blue Jays won the last two of their three-game home series versus the Tigers including Sunday’s 8-2 win. Teoscar Hernandez was 3-for-4 with two home runs, three runs scored and five RBIs. Jose Bautista went 2-for-4 with a run. Kendrys Morales finished 2-for-5 with a run and an RBI. Darwin Barney was 4-for-4 with a double.
Baltimore has been a terrible road team this season and it is putting its worst starting pitcher on the mound. Estrada hasn’t had a very good season, but he can put together strong starts from time to time. We’re picking the Blue Jays in the series opener.
