Weaver heads to arbitration
PHOENIX, AZ (AP) – Jered Weaver and the Los Angeles Angels have gone to salary arbitration, with the pitcher asking for his salary to be doubled to $8.8 million and the team arguing he should be paid $7,365,000.
The 28-year-old right-hander was 13-12 with a 3.01 ERA in 34 starts for the Angels last season. His record was down from 16-8 in 2009, but his ERA improved from 3.75.
He made $4,265,000 last year.
Arbitrators Margaret Brogan, James Oldham and Robert Herzog are expected to issue a decision Thursday, a day after hearing the case.
In the first decision, pitcher Ross Ohlendorf defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates on Wednesday and was awarded a raise from $439,000 to $2,025,000 by arbitrators Steven Wolf, Fredric Horowitz and Herzog instead of the team’s $1.4 million offer. Ohlendorf was 1-11 with a 4.07 ERA in 21 starts for Pittsburgh last year.
Eleven more players remain in arbitration, with hearings scheduled through Feb. 18.
