Pirates complete sweep
Pittsburgh edged host Cincinnati by a score of 9-8 Sunday afternoon to complete a three-game road sweep. Kevin Newman helped pace the Pirates offense as he was a perfect 4-for-4 with a double, three runs scored and an RBI. Bryan Reynolds went 2-for-4 with a triple, a walk, a run and three RBIs. Jose Osuna finished 1-for-3 with a double, a walk, two runs scored and an RBI. Dario Agrazal picked up the win as he gave up four earned runs on seven hits with five strikeouts and two walks over five innings. Felipe Vazquez notched the save as he allowed one earned run on one hit with one strikeout and no walks over 1 1/3 innings. Joe Musgrove gets the start tonight for Pittsburgh as he enters with an 8-12 record, 4.74 ERA and 1.24 WHIP with 125 strikeouts over 142 1/3 innings pitched.
Hoskins homers in defeat
Rhys Hoskins finished 1-for-4 with a home run and two RBIs to lead Philadelphia Sunday afternoon, but that was all the offense in a 3-2 loss at Miami. Cesar Hernandez was 1-for-3 with a walk and a run scored to also contribute. Jean Segura and Scott Kingery each ended the contest 1-for-3. Aaron Nola took the loss as he surrendered three earned runs on five hits with seven strikeouts and one walk over seven innings. Jason Vargas draws the start tonight for the Phillies as he comes in with a 6-6 record, 3.99 ERA and 1.27 WHIP with 92 strikeouts over 117 1/3 innings of work.
MLB Betting Trends
Pittsburgh
The Pirates are 11-30 in their last 41 games overall. Pittsburgh is 1-5 in its last six Monday games.
Philadelphia
The Phillies are 4-0 in their last four games versus the NL Central. Philadelphia is 5-13 in its last 18 Monday games.
Prediction:
Musgrove is very inconsistent and the Phillies are the team way more in need of wins at this stage of the season. The veteran Vargas is still capable of frustrating opposing hitters and typically keeps his team right in the game. I’m siding with host Philly here as Musgrove seems like the type of pitcher its offense can break out against.
