Could Cardinals land a big money arm?
ST. LOUIS, MO (The Spread) – The Cardinals don’t appear to be a team in need of pitching help but reports continue to surface this week that they’re in the market for another big arm.
Ken Rosenthal and Jon Morosi of FOX Sports reported late Wednesday night that the Cardinals are exploring a trade for David Price or Cole Hamels, or the possibility of signing free agent Max Scherzer. Rosenthal also predicted earlier this week that the Cards might be interested in free agent James Shields as well, so clearly there’s smoke billowing from St. Louis.
The Cardinals’ rotation would appear to be set thanks to ace Adam Wainwright, youngster Michael Wacha, steady veterans Lance Lynn and John Lackey, as well as relievers-ready-to-turn-starters Carlos Martinez and Marco Gonzales. But Wacha’s health is an issue and given the inexperience of Martinez and Gonzales, GM John Mozeliak could be inclined to add another arm.
Out of the possible names being bantered about, Scherzer might make the most sense. While his asking price is high, he wouldn’t force Mozeliak to part with any of his young prospects in order to complete a deal. Scherzer is also from the area and pitched collegiately at the University of Missouri.
