The pitching matchup tonight has Masahiro Tanaka (8-9, 5.09 ERA) on the mound for the Yankees to face Jordan Zimmerman (6-8, 5.69) of the Tigers. Zimmerman has struggled most of the season, but put together a 7-inning outing against the Astros in his last start. On the year, he has 77 strikeouts with 34 walks and a 1.51 WHIP. Tanaka is coming off an 8-inning outing where he allowed just 1 run and 2 hits to the Rays. He has 132 strikeouts with 27 walks on the season and a 1.27 WHIP.
The Yankees took the series opener on Monday, 7-3, but the Tigers came back with an upset win on Tuesday, 4-3. Detroit is now 48-57 overall and 21-32 on the road while the Yankees are 57-48 overall and 32-19 at home.
Tuesday’s game saw the Tigers jump out to a 4-0 lead after three innings and hold off the Yankees from there. C.C. Sabathia allowed all four runs in six innings of work to fall to 9-4 while Anibal Sanchez went 6.2 innings and allowed just two runs to record his third win. John Hicks had a three-run home run in the second inning for Detroit while Justin Upton added a solo home run, his 18th of the season, in the third. Didi Gregorius finished with two hits and three RBI to lead the Yankees. Shane Greene recorded a five-out save for the Tigers to keep the Yankees from tying things up.
I really liked the pitching matchup for New York on Tuesday and expected the Yankees to win by multiple runs. That didn’t happen. Now, the pitching matchup seems a little more even, but the Yankees still find themselves as a heavy favorite. Detroit had to use its best bullpen arms on Tuesday, including their new closer for five outs. That means they won’t have many arms to offer today and they will need some, because Zimmerman doesn’t get deep into many games. Look for the Yankees to come through today.
