The Friday, June 5 MLB schedule delivers 15 games to choose from, and the board stretches from an early Wrigley Field matinee to a late Freeway Series opener under the lights in Los Angeles.
Marquee names dot the card. The Dodgers, owners of one of the best records in the National League, host the rebuilding Angels, while a pair of hot pitchers square off in Philadelphia. Our three best bets are spread across the day for a reason. Today we have an afternoon total in the Windy City, a twilight underdog moneyline angle in Philadelphia, and a late-night run-line lean in Chavez Ravine. Each pick below comes with the odds, the public split, and the case on both sides. You can also browse Friday's full MLB predictions for more of the slate. Scroll through for the full breakdown.

Early Game — San Francisco Giants at Chicago Cubs
GIANTS VS CUBS DATE, TIME & HOW TO WATCH | |
|---|---|
| Where | Wrigley Field, Chicago, IL |
| When | Friday, June 5 – 2:20 PM ET |
| TV | Marquee Sports Network |
The Cubs (33-30) open a weekend set against the Giants (25-38) as solid home favorites at -178. Chicago hands the ball to Edward Cabrera (3-2, 4.00 ERA), who returns from a two-start absence caused by a blister on his right middle finger. San Francisco counters with veteran left-hander Robbie Ray (3-6, 4.45 ERA).
Ray's full-season line hides a sharp recent slide. He carried a 2.76 ERA into mid-May before stumbling to an 0-2 mark with a 9.00 ERA across his last four starts. Cabrera, meanwhile, pitched to a tidy 4.00 ERA before the blister but now carries some rust into the outing. Two starters with question marks would normally point a total higher, not lower.
However, the market has moved the other way. The total opened at 11.5 and has been bet down to 11.0, with the under shaded to -115. That move signals money on the lower-scoring side. It is the angle worth tracking in this spot.

The Pick: Under 11.0 (-115)
The case for the under starts with the line itself. A total of 11 is already elevated, and the move down from 11.5 reflects real money on fewer runs. A day game with two bullpens in normal rest adds to the lean. The case against is straightforward, though. Ray's 9.00 ERA over four starts and Cabrera's layoff both hint at early traffic, and Wrigley can turn into a launching pad on the right afternoon. This is a lean on a number that has already moved, not a heavy conviction play.
Mid-Day Game — Chicago White Sox at Philadelphia Phillies
WHITE SOX VS PHILLIES DATE, TIME & HOW TO WATCH | |
|---|---|
| Where | Citizens Bank Park, Philadelphia, PA |
| When | Friday, June 5 – 6:40 PM ET |
| TV | NBC Sports Philadelphia |
The surprising White Sox (33-29) visit the Phillies (33-29) in a meeting of teams sitting on identical records. Philadelphia opens as a clear home favorite at -182. Still, the betting market tells a more interesting story than the price alone.
The Phillies opened near -199 and have since been bet down to -182, even though roughly 71% of moneyline tickets sit on Philadelphia. When a favorite's price shrinks while the public keeps buying that same side, it usually points to sharper money on the underdog. That reverse line movement is the angle here.
The pitching matchup supports a closer game than the odds suggest. Anthony Kay (5-1, 3.77 ERA) carries the load for Chicago after a dominant May in which he went 4-0 with a 1.95 ERA and 27 strikeouts. Jesús Luzardo (4-4, 4.30 ERA) answers for Philadelphia. He has tightened up lately, allowing just four earned runs over his last four outings. Both lefties are throwing well, which keeps the upset path open.

The Pick: Chicago White Sox Moneyline (+150)
The case for the White Sox rests on the line move and the matchup. Sharper money has shaded toward Chicago, Kay is in peak form, and +150 offers real value on a club playing better than its reputation. The case against is equally clear, however. Philadelphia owns the deeper lineup and home-field edge, and Luzardo has limited damage in recent starts. Kay's May also came against a softer schedule than this road test. Taking the plus-money side here is a value play, not a statement on the better team.
Late Game — Los Angeles Angels at Los Angeles Dodgers
ANGELS VS DODGERS DATE, TIME & HOW TO WATCH | |
|---|---|
| Where | Dodger Stadium, Los Angeles, CA |
| When | Friday, June 5 – 10:10 PM ET |
| TV | SportsNet LA |
The Freeway Series opens with the NL West-leading Dodgers (40-23) hosting the Angels (16-31). Los Angeles enters as a heavy -204 favorite and has won seven of its last 10 games. The Angels arrive buried in last place in the AL West, more than 20 games behind their crosstown rivals in the standings.
Roki Sasaki (3-3, 4.59 ERA) takes the ball for the Dodgers. The Angels counter with left-hander Reid Detmers (2-5, 4.63 ERA). Detmers misses plenty of bats, with 82 strikeouts in 68 innings, but his record reflects a thin supporting cast. The Dodgers lineup, anchored by Shohei Ohtani against his former club, presents a far tougher test than Detmers usually faces.
With the Dodgers priced at -204 on the moneyline, the run line offers a more rewarding way to back the favorite. Los Angeles -1.5 pays +110, turning a lopsided matchup into plus money. The talent gap is the entire thesis here.

The Pick: Los Angeles Dodgers Run Line -1.5 (+110)
The case for laying the run runs on the standings. A 24-game gap in the win column is enormous, the Dodgers are scuffling far less than their guest, and +110 rewards a multi-run win. The case against centers on the starter and the format. Sasaki's 4.59 ERA and 1.35 WHIP can keep this closer than the matchup implies, and run lines are volatile by nature. One-run games happen even in mismatches, and Detmers' strikeout stuff can quiet a lineup for a night. The plus price is what makes the risk worth taking.
