Cubs snap skid
Chicago ended its nine-game losing streak Friday night at St. Louis as it cruised to an 8-2 victory. Ian Happ helped pace the Cubs offense as he finished 3-for-5 with a home run, two doubles, two runs scored and two RBIs. Robel Garcia went 1-for-2 off the bench with a homer, a walk and three RBIs. Ben Zobrist was 1-for-3 with two walks, a run and an RBI. Brad Wieck struck out the only batter he faced to pick up the win in relief. Cole Hamels starts today as he enters with a 7-7 record, 3.92 ERA and 1.42 WHIP plus 35 strikeouts over 137 2/3 innings.
Cardinals drop third straight
St. Louis fell 8-2 at home versus Chicago Friday night to drop to 90-70 overall and 49-30 at home. Tommy Edman helped lead the Cardinals offensively as he was 3-for-4 with a double, a walk and a run scored. Matt Carpenter went 2-for-3 with a solo home run plus a walk. Yadier Molina ended the contest 2-for-5 with an RBI. Andrew Miller took the loss in relief as he allowed four earned runs on two hits with one strikeout and one walk over one-third of an inning. Adam Wainwright gets the start tonight for St. Louis as he comes in with a 14-9 record, 3.98 ERA and 1.39 WHIP plus 150 strikeouts over 167 1/3 innings of work.
MLB Betting Trends
Chicago
The Cubs are 1-4 in the last five Hamels road starts. Chicago is 1-4 in its last five Saturday games.
St. Louis
The Cardinals are 13-3 in the last 16 Wainwright starts. St. Louis is 5-1 in the last six meetings.
Prediction:
Chicago surprised a lot of people with last night’s win, but the Cardinals have been strong at home all season and are trying to fend off the Brewers in the NL Central race. Wainwright is coming off a poor start, but he’s been effective most of the time since the All-Star Break. I’d rather take my chances on the Cardinals here than the Cubs actually putting it together a second straight day.
