The pitching matchup for tonight’s game has Sam Gaviglio (3-2, 3.38 ERA) on the mound for Seattle to face Ricky Nolasco (3-9, 4.86) of the Angels. Nolasco is coming off his best showing of the year, pitching 6.1 scoreless innings against the Dodgers. He has 76 strikeouts and 27 walks this season along with a 1.43 WHIP. Gaviglio has allowed two runs or less in four of his last five starts. He has 28 strikeouts and 15 walks this season with a 1.24 WHIP.
Seattle opened this weekend series with a 10-0 win over the Angels. The Mariners have now won three straight meetings with Los Angeles this season. The Angels are 42-42 overall and 22-18 at home while the Mariners are 40-41 overall and 15-24 on the road.
The Mariners dominated Friday’s game, as they racked up 17 hits while allowing just five to the Angels. Ariel Miranda improved to 7-4 on the season with a 7-inning, 2-hit performance on the mound for Seattle. Robinson Cano had a big day at the plate, hitting two home runs while driving in five runs to lead the Mariners. Ben Gamel also drove in a pair of runs in the win.
Nolaso may have looked solid in his last start, but that was an anomaly compared to what he has done all year. I don’t think he will be able to duplicate that tonight. Gaviglio has given up runs, but not many. He usually puts Seattle in a position to win. Look for him to do it again and get some run support from his hitters. The Mariners have the better lineup and I think they have the better pitcher as well.
