Drawing the start for Pittsburgh will be Gerrit Cole (11-9, 3.93 ERA), while Milwaukee is going with Brent Suter (2-2, 3.55). Cole has a 1.22 WHIP with 168 strikeouts in 181 innings. He threw eight shutout innings in a 1-0 home loss to the Cubs his last start, allowing two hits while striking out eight and walking four. Cole has a 3.79 ERA in 15 road starts. Suter holds a 1.29 WHIP with 51 strikeouts over 63 1/3 innings. He has made 18 appearances this year including 10 starts. He only went three innings in his last start, not allowing a run on two hits with two strikeouts and a walk in a 7-2 home win over the Nationals. Suter has a 3.74 ERA in 33 2/3 home innings.
The Pirates are 68-77 on the season and 29-43 on the road, while the Brewers come in at 75-69 and 39-33 at home. Pittsburgh has won six of the last 10 meetings and the total has gone under eight times.
On Monday, the Pirates rolled to a 7-0 victory in the series opener. Andrew McCutchen and Starling Marte both hit a two-run home run to key the offense. Gregory Polanco was 2-for-4 with an RBI. Steven Brault pitched six innings of one-hit ball to earn the win, while also helping his own cause at the dish by going 2-for-3 with a double and a run plus two RBIs. Domingo Santana, Jesus Aguilar and Manny Pina had a hit apiece for Milwaukee. Brandon Woodruff gave up six earned runs in five innings for the loss.
Cole is coming off a gem against a strong offense and there’s no reason the Pirates offense can’t stay hot in a hitter’s park against an average pitcher. The Brewers had a letdown Modnay after the strong series at the Cubs and we’re thinking it’s likely to continue another day.
