Daniel Gossett (3-6, 5.49 ERA) draws the start for Oakland, while the Angels are going with Andrew Heaney (0-0, 8.10). Gossett has a 1.44 WHIP with 44 strikeouts in 59 innings. He allowed five earned runs on eight hits with six strikeouts over five innings his last start, an 8-7 loss at Baltimore. Gossett has a 5.40 road ERA in seven starts. Heaney has made two starts since returning from Tommy John surgery, the latest being a no-decision in a 7-5 home loss to the Rangers as he surrendered four earned runs on eight hits with four strikeouts over five innings. He has a 1.50 WHIP and has yet to walk a batter in 10 innings.
Oakland has a 58-72 record and is 21-41 on the road, while Los Angeles is 66-65 and 35-31 at home. The two squads have split the last 10 meetings 5-5, while the total has gone under in six of those games.
On Sunday, the Athletics completed a three-game home sweep of the Rangers with an 8-3 win. Matt Olson led the way as he was 3-for-4 with a home run, two runs and two RBIs to lead the way. Matt Chapman went 3-for-4 with a home run and three runs scored. Marcus Semien had a hit, a run and drove in three. Bruce Maxwell added two hits. Jharel Cotton gave up two runs (one earned) and struck out nine over six innings to get the win, while Blake Treinen picked up his seventh save. The Angels have lost four of their last five, including Sunday’s 7-5 home loss to the Astros. Ben Revere was 2-for-5 with a double and three RBIs to pace the hosts. Luis Valbuena hit a two-run homer, while Luis Pujols had two hits. Andrelton Simmons added a hit and two runs. Cam Bedrosian suffered the loss in relief.
Los Angeles hasn’t been in good form lately and Heaney is still working his way back from major surgery, but it is encouraging that he hasn’t walked a batter. If his control is there, the stuff could follow soon. Gossett is a young’ mediocre pitcher coupled with an Oakland team that has been awful on the road. Take the Angels.
