Mets 2012 MLB Season Odds
(The Spread) – Do the New York Mets have enough firepower to make things interesting the National League East this season?
Oddsmakers currently list the Mets as a 150/1 long shot to win the 2012 World Series and 60/1 to win the National League Pennant this year. They’re also 50/1 to win the National League East and carry an over/under of 72 for number of total wins in the regular season.
The Mets weren’t that active this past winter, although they did make a trade to help strengthen their bullpen when they acquired reliever Ramon Ramirez from the Giants in exchange for centerfielder Angel Pagan. The Mets also received speedy outfielder Andres Torres in the deal.
Along with Pagan, the Mets also lost star shortstop Jose Reyes, who took his 2011 batting title down to South Beach when he signed a multiyear deal with the Marlins over the winter. The Mets also parted with pitchers Jason Isringhausen and Chris Capuano, as well as catcher Ronny Paulino.
OUTLOOK: After missing the entire 2011 season due to shoulder surgery, the Mets will get back ace Johan Santana this season, which is obviously a boost to their starting rotation. But even if he bounces back to form, the Mets don’t have enough weapons to challenge the Phillies, Braves and Marlins in the division. Even the much-maligned Nationals have a brighter outlook than the Amazin’s. Outside of David Wright (who only hit .263 last season) and Ike Davis (who only hit .263 last season), nobody in that lineup will scare opposing pitchers. Granted, Daniel Murphy hit .305 last season and Torres is only two years removed from having a breakout campaign for the Giants, but the Mets simply don’t have enough to compete.
