2012 Miami Marlins MLB Regular Season Win Totals & World Series Odds

Marlins 2012 Season Odds

(The Spread) – The Miami Marlins made a couple of splash signings this winter but will it be enough to get them over the top in the NL East?

According to oddsmakers the Marlins are currently 20/1 to win the 2012 World Series and 8/1 to win the National League Pennant. They’re also 6/1 to win the National League East and have an over/under of 85 for number of total wins in the regular season.

The Marlins arguably hooked the biggest fish this past winter (excuse the pun), signing shortstop Jose Reyes to a six-year, $106 million contract. The deal includes a $22 million club option for 2018 with a $4 million buyout.

The Marlins also signed free agent Mark Buehrle to a four-year, $58 million contract and they strengthened their bullpen by adding closer Health Bell (three years, $27 million). Austin Kearns, Aaron Rowand and Chad Gaudin rounded out their minor league signings.

On the trade front the Marlins acquired manager Ozzie Guillen and pitcher Ricardo Andres from the White Sox in exchange for pitcher Jhan Marinez and infielder Osvaldo Martinez. They also traded catcher John Baker to the Padres for pitcher Wade LeBlanc, and acquired starter Carlos Zambrano from the Cubs for pitcher Chris Volstad.

OUTLOOK: Adding Reyes will definitely help the lineup and defense, although moving Hanley Ramirez to third is a gamble. (He wasn’t too pleased initially to switch positions but he seems to be warming up to the idea now.) The additions of Zambrano and Buehrle essentially balance out the losses of Javier Vazquez and Volstad, so the Marlins shouldn’t take a step back pitching wise. Of course, “Big Z” is always a second away from another meltdown. If this team gels under Guillen then they will compete for the NL East crown. But the situation in South Beach seems like a volatile situation, what with Guillen, Zambrano and Ramirez all under the same clubhouse. We’ll just have to wait and see if the Marlins soar or combust.
