Royals 2012 MLB Season Odds

(The Spread) – The Kansas City Royals didn’t make any big splashes on the free agent market last winter but they do hope their biggest trade makes a huge difference for their starting rotation.

According to oddsmakers the Royals are currently 50/1 to win the 2012 World Series and 25/1 to win the American League Pennant this year. They’re also 9/1 to win the American League Central and have an over/under of 80.5 for total number of wins in the 2012 regular season.

Arguably the biggest move the Royals made this offseason was trading outfielder Melky Cabrera to the Giants in exchange for Jonathan Sanchez and Ryan Verdugo. Sanchez has had his issues with control in the past, but there’s no doubt that the erratic left-hander has the talent to be a No. 2 in this league. He has swing-and-miss stuff.

In free agency, the Royals signed Bruce Chen to a two-year, $9 million deal and reliever Jonathan Broxton to a one-year, $4 million contract. They also added infielder Yuniesky Betancourt to a one-year, $2 million deal and Jose Mijares to a one-year, $925K contract.

OUTLOOK: If youngsters Eric Hosmer, Mike Moustakas, Luke Hochevar, Salvador Perez and Felipe Paulino can make big contributions to the big league club this year, the Royals will take another step forward. The club also has a couple of top pitchers in their farm system in Mike Montgomery, Jake Odorizzi and John Lamb, although for now guys like Sanchez, Hochevar and Chen will have to hold down the fort. Can the Royals compete this year? No question. Are they probably still another year away from having the weapons to challenge the stacked Detroit Tigers? Probably. Either way, things are finally looking up in Kansas City.
