CUSA? Yes. Winning records? No. At 1-5 overall and 0-2 in conference play, the Bearkats are tied with Kennesaw for last place in the league standings. New Mexico State ain’t much better, bringing a 2-4 / 1-1 record into the fray. However, the Aggies arrive in Huntsville off a much-needed bye week, during which they’ve schemed to exploit Sam Houston’s weak run defense. The Bearkats are strong against the pass, allowing just 137.8 yards per game, but give up 200.3 yards on the ground. That could open the door for Aggies running back James Jones, who is averaging 6.5 yards per carry. NMSU’s run defense yields only 125.5 rushing yards per game, so with Sam Houston averaging 95 yards on the ground, the Bearkats may need quarterback Landyn Locke to carry the offense. The Aggies have their own quarterback concerns: Trey Hedden has thrown five touchdown passes and six interceptions, while Adam Damante struggled in the loss to FIU. It’s tough to take a Sam Houston squad that’s scored just three points in each of their two conference losses, but we’re equally concerned about New Mexico State’s 1-4 SU/ATS and 0-5 ITS (In The Stats) mark versus FBS foes this season. We’ll take the points with the home dog. Thursday, Oct 22 Liberty over KENNESAW STATE by 16 Finally, a CUSA program with a winning record makes an appearance on your TV screen, and they’re looking for payback from cellar-dweller Kennesaw State. Last year, Liberty fell 48-43 to the Owls in three overtimes in its season finale. KSU went on to the CUSA championship game, where they topped Jacksonville State – while Liberty posted its first losing effort in 20 years and snapped a four-year bowl streak. But after losing this year’s season opener to powerful James Madison, the Flames have been rekindled by five consecutive wins. Liberty QB Deshawn Purdie has led the way, passing for 1,050 yards, 8 TDs, and no interceptions through six games. But while LU has caught fire, the Owls are clearly a team in search of their identity. They went from 2 wins in 2024 to 10 wins last season, the biggest leap of any FBS team, then immediately began a 1-5 regression to the norm in 2026. In KSU’s defense, their last three losses came by just 3, 1, and 3 points (Owls are one of only two FBS teams with three losses by three points or fewer this season). Yes, Kennesaw’s stop-unit defense has been better against non-Power 4 opponents, allowing 19.8 PPG in those matchups, but we see their luck running out tonight. Lay the lumber in a mismatch that could get real ugly, real fast. James Madison over APPALACHIAN STATE by 3 For those of you who dream of pursuing a head-coaching career in college football, the blueprint for building and sustaining a winning program is on full display with the James Madison Dukes. Before engineering one of the greatest turnarounds in the sport’s history at Indiana, Curt Cignetti made his bones with a 52-9 record over five seasons with JMU. Next up, current UCLA head coach Bob Chesney took over for Cignetti in Harrisonburg and posted a 21-6 mark in two seasons. Fresh off his banishment from the Florida program, first-year head coach Billy Napier now rules over this collegiate power built on swagger, toughness, and sustained success. The Dukes of Hazard haven’t missed a beat in 2026: JMU is 7-0 and 4-0 in the Sun Belt. They have won 12 straight regular-season conference games and are 7-0 for the fifth time in program history. With a high-powered attack that averages 42.9 points, 461 yards of total offense, and 223.7 rushing yards per game, it’s easy to overlook a stout defense that allows just 16 PPG, with no opponent topping 24 points on the scoreboard. However, we think 4-2 Appalachian State could be laying in the weeds here. The Mountaineers have sold out 19 of their last 21 games at The Rock, including tonight’s fracas, and they arrive after rallying from a 10-point halftime deficit to beat Coastal Carolina last week, 35-32. In fact, every Mountaineer FBS game this year has been a one-score affair inside the final two minutes. ASU’s offense finally hit on all cylinders in its comeback victory, piling up 516 yards, including 253 on the ground – its best totals against an FBS opponent this season. A key turnover test also awaits, as the Dukes have thrown just one interception in seven games while App State’s defense has picked off nine passes in six games. Can’t quite call for the outright upset, but we will grab the points in what should be a closer-than-expected outcome in the high mountains. 3-STAR BEST BET MEMPHIS over East Carolina by 20 Memphis brings one of the American’s most explosive offenses into Thursday night after a turnover-filled stumble at Tulane. The Tigers’ turnover meltdown was historic by recent standards: six turnovers against the Green Wave, their most since a 2006 game against – wait for it – East Carolina. The 31-17 Tulane loss was also a red-zone frustration fest: Memphis reached the red zone on all five of its second-half drives but scored on only one. ECU also arrives off an incredibly frustrating finish. The Pirates led UAB 17-9 late in regulation, but the Blazers tied it with 35 seconds left, then won 30-17 in overtime. So, after that strange OT collapse, East Carolina now faces a second straight Thursday road game. Surprisingly, the Greenville Buccaneers lead the series, 18-8, have won the last three meetings, and are 8-2 outright in their last ten against Memphis. But the Tigers must be seeing red after their loss to the Greenies dropped them into a fourth-place tie in the American Conference race. With its schedule getting tougher by the week – Army, USF, and Navy are on deck – it’s now or never for first-year head coach Charles Huff and his Tigers. With Memphis looking to exact triple revenge against the Pirates and get back in the win column after blowing a three-game victory skein, we seal the deal with THE CLINCHER: East Carolina is 1-9 SU / 2-8 ATS as a dog of 6-plus points versus opponents that have revenge in the series.
