Tuesday, Nov 3MIAMI OH over Buffalo by 10
The Buffalo Bulls are riding a 3-0 SU/ATS win skein as both they and Miami sit tied near the top of a crowded MAC race (behind Ohio 4-0/6-2, Western Michigan 4-1/6-3, and Toledo 3-1/6-2). The RedHawks’ 75 YPG rushing defense goes toe-to-toe with the Bulls’ 176 YPG rushing offense. Crack open the history book, and you’ll find the home favorite in this series on a commanding 7-0 SU/ATS winning run. And, in case you didn’t know — and we’ll bet the ranch that you don’t — Miami University has a distinctive, decades-long partnership with the Miami Tribe of Oklahoma (the Myaamia people). In our tour of MAC teams’ nicknames in this issue, the school and region take their name from the Miami Valley and the tribe’s ancestral lands. In 1997, the school changed its athletic nickname from Redskins to RedHawks at the Tribe’s request. For this game, the RedHawks are wearing special helmets and jerseys featuring the Myaamia Heritage Logo to honor the ongoing relationship and the Myaamia Center on campus. Myaamia!
Ohio U over AKRON by 8
Ohio enters as the clear MAC front-runner (first place) on a five-game winning streak, while Akron sits at the bottom of the conference on a long losing skid. With it, head coach John Hauser is in his first season. Ohio has a strong home record (4-0) and solid road form in conference play. Unbeaten in MAC play, Ohio features a balanced, run-first attack that should exploit Akron’s struggling defense. Road favorite status and momentum favor a controlled win against an opponent whose only win this season came against FCS Robert Morris. Recent close games show Ohio can grind out results when needed. So, while we just painted a nice backdrop for the Bobcats, the real fear is Ohio playing down to the level of the opposition. Should they do so, it could prove costly, given that MAC teams coming off consecutive SU/ATS losses are 28-14 ATS. In other words: beware of the Zips tonight. And in case you were wondering, the “Bobcats” nickname (adopted in 1925 via a campus contest) celebrated 100 years in 2025. The mascot is Rufus the Bobcat (named after the species Lynx rufus and university co-founder Rufus Putnam). In a memorable 2010 moment, the student in the Rufus costume famously charged and tackled Ohio State’s Brutus Buckeye as the Buckeyes took the field. Another unique fact: The “Zips” nickname is short for “Zippers,” chosen in a 1920s campus contest after B.F. Goodrich’s popular rubber overshoes (reflecting Akron’s “Rubber City” heritage). The mascot is Zippy, a female kangaroo (one of the few female college mascots in the U.S.), complete with a zipper on her pouch. Zippy debuted in the 1950s and later won the Capital One National Mascot of the Year award. This is the kind of information you get in the Playbook, especially in games where the matchups are lacking in appeal – like most of the weekday contests this week.

Eastern Michigan over Central Michigan by 8
The MAC’s oldest rivalry returns this week at neutral-site Ford Field in Detroit, the first of two planned Motor City MACtion games and the debut of a new “Battle of the Fans.” Eastern Michigan last played at Ford Field in the 2019 Quick Lane Bowl, where the Eagles lost to Pittsburgh. Make no mistake, EMU head coach Chris Creighton, one of our favorite sideline mentors, remembers last season’s 24-13 setback in Mt. Pleasant. With it, Creighton is 19-5-1 ATS away from home in revenge MAC games (one of the reasons for our admiration for him). FYI: With this being the nickname week in the MAC, Eastern Michigan’s “Eagles” nickname and Swoop the bald eagle mascot arrived in 1991 after the school retired its previous “Hurons” name amid concerns over Native American imagery. Before that, the teams were known as the Normalites and the Men from Ypsi. Central Michigan adopted the Chippewas nickname in 1942, reflecting the Chippewa (Ojibwe) tribes that historically lived in the mid-Michigan area, the Chippewa River that runs through Mount Pleasant, and the fact that the university’s yearbook was already called the Chippewa.
Ball State over UMASS over by 1
Ball State and UMass collide with the series deadlocked at 2-2. Both teams remain perfect at home in this rivalry, and the season suddenly hangs in the balance. This is their first meeting since 2015 and the first time both enter as full MAC members. Ball State arrives with real heat. A 32-31 overtime escape at Bowling Green. A 34-17 homecoming beat down of Sacramento State. The Cardinals are hunting their first three-game win streak since 2022 and their first consecutive road wins in years. Bowl eligibility and a late MAC title-race charge are still very much alive. Four games left. No more margin for error. UMass looked dangerous early. They opened 4-0 for the first time since 2007, with a win at Rutgers and a 35-6 road demolition of Sacramento State. Then the floor dropped. Four straight losses—Eastern Michigan, Miami (OH), Buffalo in overtime, and UConn. Their defense has held firm as one of the better units in the MAC, surrendering just 21.1 points per game. Still, the Minutemen remain one of the few FBS programs that has never reached a bowl game since moving up in 2012. That drought is staring them in the face. The programs carry weight beyond the standings. Ball State was built by the five Ball brothers—Lucius, William, Edmund, Frank, and George—the industrialists behind the Ball Corporation and the iconic Ball Mason jar. They bought the campus out of foreclosure in 1917, donated it to the state, and the school opened in 1918. Alumni include David Letterman and Jim Davis, the creator of Garfield. UMass took the Minutemen name in 1972, replacing Aggies and Redmen, making it one of the earliest schools to drop a Native American-themed moniker. Both teams are fighting for more than a win. Bowl hopes. Conference relevance. A chance to flip the script on seasons that refuse to go quietly (UMass’s last bowl appearance was in 1972 in the Boardwalk Bowl, when they beat UC Davis, 35-14). The series history and home streaks only raise the stakes. Someone’s streak ends Saturday. We see the Minutemen picking up their marbles and heading home.
Toledo over Sacramento State by 28
This is no ordinary road game for the Rockets. They are chasing a conference title, while the Hornets are still searching for their footing in the FBS. Toledo sits at 6-2 and 3-1 in the MAC, tied near the top of the standings with a real shot at the championship game. They just survived a 45-38 slugfest with Western Michigan to clinch bowl eligibility for a 17th straight season, powered by an offense that has been scoring at will. Four games left. The path is clear if they keep winning. Sacramento State is in its first year at the FBS level and in the MAC, and sits at 2-7 and 1-5. They just earned their first conference win in program history, a 31-10 home victory over Kent State, and this is their final game at Hornet Stadium. Senior Night. A chance to show the transition is starting to take hold. The problem is they’ve been soundly outgained by all 8 FBS rivals they faced in their coming-out season, by an average of –114 net yards per game. Next to Toledo’s +110 net YPG against the same ilk, and the Hornets’ 49-3 loss they suffered immediately after their initial win in September, it leaves their heads swirling. No thanks.

UTSA over FLORIDA ATLANTIC by 10
ESPN lights up a high-stakes American Conference showdown Thursday night in Boca Raton as top-dog UTSA (7-1, 4-0) rolls into an always-dangerous Florida Atlantic (5-3/2-2) team that can light up the scoreboard against anyone. The conference-leading Roadrunners have been rolling, their only loss a 30-6 reality check at No. 1 Texas back in September. They’re averaging 33.5 points and roughly 409 total yards a game, including 185 on the ground. The defense is the clear soft spot—allowing 26 points and about 392 yards—but even that unit is still more than 100 yards better per game than FAU’s leaky stop-unit. Not a great matchup for the Owls, as UTSA has scored 31 or more in five of its last six wins and just hung 42 on Tulane. Unique fact: The Roadrunners’ nickname came down to a student vote in 1977. An armadillo nearly won after the first election was voided; the roadrunner staged a comeback in the final runoff and stuck. The mascot is Rowdy. Someone’s going to make a statement.
James Madison over SOUTHERN MISS by 10
ESPN2 drops a Thursday-night Sun Belt heavyweight in Hattiesburg as James Madison (7-2, 4-2) rolls into Southern Miss (3-5, 2-2), which has won two straight and is suddenly running with real authority at home. The Dukes opened the Billy Napier era on a heater before back-to-back overtime heartbreakers (at App State, then vs. Troy) slammed the brakes. They’re still one of the highest-scoring offenses in the country—39.1 points and roughly 450 total yards a game, including more than 200 on the ground. The defense has been the quiet stabilizer all year, holding opponents under 19 points. Now they have to bury the close-game demons and get back to business. Southern Miss has life. Two straight wins. Back-to-back 200-yard rushing games. The ground game is suddenly physical and productive. The overall offense is still uneven (26.9 points per game), and the defense remains leaky, but home field gives them a real chance to turn this into a street fight. We’ll bet you didn’t know the Dukes’ nickname honors former university president Samuel P. Duke. In 1947, the first men’s basketball team told him they would name the squad after him if he provided towels and equipment. He did—and the name stuck. The mascot is Duke Dog, an English bulldog chosen as the “royal” companion to a duke. Thursday night. A high-powered offense versus a home team that just found its legs. Interestingly, someone’s streak continues while someone else’s ends in this must-see Thursday night contest. We say it’s James Madison that dictates the terms.
Goldsheet:
Recommendation: Buffalo +6.5
Recommendation: Akron +7.5, first half
