Franchitti has not performed well this season. He is currently 10th in the point standings after winning the season title the last three seasons. This year, he has finished 10th or worse in the first three races. He did earn a fifth place finish in the last race, perhaps a sign that he is turning things around.
Despite the struggles, Franchitti has been made the favorite to win this race, as he has 9/2 odds to win. He is a two-time winner of the Indy 500, claiming the title in 2007 and 2010. He started third in both of those races. Outside of his two wins, Franchitti has never finished inside the top 5 of his other six Indy 500’s. This year, Franchitti will be starting 16th.
In the history of the Indy 500, only one driver has won this race when starting in the 16th position. That came in 2005 from Dan Wheldon. Franchitti will start in row 6 and only three Indy 500 champions have come from the sixth row.
The Indianapolis 500 will take place Sunday, May 27 from Indianapolis Motor Speedway at Noon ET.
