Oddsmakers from online sports book SPORTSBETTING.COM have opened the odds for the 2009 U.S. Open by making Tiger Woods an early 3/2 favorite. Phil Mickelson, who is returning to the tour a week before the U.S. Open after taking some time off to attend to his sick wife, is a midrange favorite at 10/1 and Geoff Ogilvy has been given 18/1 odds to win.
There should be little debate as to why Woods is the current favorite to win this year’s U.S. Open. Not only is he currently the No. 1 rated PGA golfer in the world, but he’s also won the U.S. Open three times, including last year when he was victorious at Torrey Pines Golf Course. Woods’ previous wins at the U.S. Open before 2008 were in 2002 and 2000.
Woods currently has 14 wins in Major Championships, including four at the Masters, three at the U.S. Open, three at the Open Championship and four at the PGA Championship. In total, he has 91 professional wins since turning professional in 1996. There’s simply nobody like him.
Mickelson’s record is nothing to scoff at either. Although he has never won a U.S. Open Championship, he did win the Masters twice (2004, 2006) and the PGA Championship (2005) once. He also finished second at the U.S. Open four times, including in 1999, 2002, 2004 and 2006.
Ogilvy has short odds to win this year’s U.S. Open after winning the event in 2006 with a score of 285. Retief Goosen is also an intriguing long shot to win at 25/1 odds because he’s won the U.S. Open twice already (2004, 2001). So if you’re looking for a potential value pick when betting this year’s Open, Goosen may be your golfer.
The 2009 U.S. Open Championship will be played at Bethpage State Park in Farmingdale, New York starting on Thursday, June 18 and concluding Sunday, June 21.
