According to oddsmakers at Bovada.lv, Serena Williams is the clear favorite to win this event, as she has 9/4 odds. The other short odds to win are Maria Sharapova (9/2) and Simona Halep (13/2). The Australian Open will be held from Jan. 19-Feb. 1 from Melbourne Park.
Williams has won this grand-slam event five different times, last doing so in 2010. She has failed to get past the quarterfinals in her last three Australian Opens. Williams is an 18-time winner of grand-slam tournaments.
Sharapova won this tournament back in 2008 and she comes into the event with five grand-slam titles in her career. She was bounced out of the Australian Open before the quarterfinals in three of the last five years.
Halep has yet to win a grand slam event in her career, but she reached the quarterfinals or better in three of the four events in 2014. Her best finish in this tournament was last year, when she reached the quarterfinals.
